Abstract

Uvod: Mnogokrat zagotavlja izbrizgavanje materinega mleka fiziološko in čustveno povezanost z otrokom.

Secondary title: Mothers' experience with breast milk expression
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Many times, breast milk expression ensures emotional connection and bond between mother and child. The ability to express breast milk is priceless in supporting breastfeeding. Some experts believe that all mothers should learn milk expression. There is also a need for continuous access to professional support and assistance from healthcare staff and/or laic groups to assist lactating mothers and/or lactation advisors with information on milk expression and on the safe handling and storage of milk. Purpose: To find out and understand the experiences of mothers in relation to milk expression. Methods: Quantitative research paradigm was used. To explain the research problem literature was reviewed, carried out with electronic databases. For the purpose of empirical research, a structured questionnaire, aimed at all mothers that had experience with breast milk expression and had a child younger than 12 months. The questionnaire was accessible for solving from 11. February to 11. March. The results were processed using Microsoft Office Excel. Results: The study involved 131 mothers. Most frequent reason for milk expression was the possibility for someone else to feed the baby with breast milk. More than half of mothers reported that milk expression was occasionally painful, the weak half of the mothers said that they would decide for milk expression if they had another baby. The mothers received most of the information via the Internet and online networks, and the least from their relatives. They were most satisfied with the information about milk expression from community nurses and nurses in maternity hospital. Discussion and conclusion: Researches in foreign countries and in Slovenia show that there are many reasons for breast milk expression, and that each mother is unique and has her own individual views. It is important to listen to the mothers, observe them and give them advice so that we can observe in due time any problems they face and prevent problems before they occur. The results of the study show that mothers received inadequate information from health professionals. The results of the survey show a growing need for the health education of mothers and their families. Further research is needed on a larger sample and an even deeper questionnaire, which would provide a comprehensive insight into breast milk expression.
