Abstract

Secondary title: The impact of the economic crisis on occupational injuries
Secondary abstract: The economic crisis, which has had a strong impact on us, also has a strong influence on occupational injuries. Some studies researching the occupational injury trends in the time of the economic crisis show that the number of occupational injuries decreases every year, as does the severity of these injuries. This thesis studies the changes of the occupational injury trends in Europe and Slovenia during the crisis. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is theoretical. In this part some information is given on the legal sources in the field of health and safety at work, occupational injuries, sick leave arising from the occupational injuries, inspection surveillance regarding health and safety at work and the effect of the economic crisis on the working conditions in Europe and Slovenia. The second, empirical part of the thesis presents the statistical data on occupational injuries for a ten-year period in Slovenia and for a slightly shorter period in the European Union. Apart from the occupational injuries, the statistical data on sick leave and inspection surveillance in Slovenia is also presented. As an example of good practice, I have chosen and analysed the data of a renowned company, which has continued keep up their good work in the field of health and safety at work despite the economic crisis. The last part of the thesis compares the acquired statistical data on the occupational injuries in Slovenia to the occupational injuries in the Member States of the European Union. Based on the findings I confirm or reject the given hypotheses and give suggestions for improvement. I also give some general suggestions and my view on health and safety in the future.
