Abstract

Secondary title: Vertical violence against nursing students in a clinical setting
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Vertical violence is a form of violence that occurs between people that are unequal in their position and power. Students are often exposed to inappropriate behaviours from their superiors while performing clinical practice in a clinical setting. The purpose of the final thesis is to research the incidence and nature of the occurrence of vertical violence against nursing students in a clinical setting. Research methodology and methods: In the final thesis the quantitative methodology was used. In the empirical part, the survey method was used to obtain data. Descriptive statistical methods were used to analyse the data. 146 undergraduate nursing students participated in the survey. Results: We have found that students are most frequently exposed to experiences of psychological vertical violence, which is dominated by exposure to non-verbal violence. While on clinical placement, students often felt as if they were not a part of a team, because they were ignored by their superiors and received unfair division of labour. Sexual violence also occurred occasionally in the form of sexist comments. Students felt inferior and angry because of experiencing vertical violence. Discussion and conclusion: Vertical violence has many negative impacts on nursing students. They experience of many negative emotions during their clinical placement. They are less successful in collaborating with others, they consider leaving the nursing profession and are preforming nursing care of lower quality, due to their dysfunctional relationships.
