Abstract

Secondary title: Normative values of Four square step test
Secondary abstract: Background: Four-square step test is a valid, reliable, short and easy-to-use clinical test for evaluation of dynamic balance. The test requires stepping over 2.5 cm high obstacles in four different directions. The purpose of the present work was to determine the normative values for different age groups ranged from 20 years to 79 years, as well as for a group of nursing home residents. The second purpose of the study was to evaluate repeatability of the test. Methods: 100 adults participated in the study, half female and half male. Results: The time required to perform the test increased with age (R2 = 0.206). Residents of the nursing home needed significantly longer time to perform the test. The repeatability of the test was in all groups very good (r = 0.97). Conclusion: Results of the test increase with age, the test is sensitive for differences between community dwelling and nursing home residents.
