Abstract

Secondary title: Knowledge about diabetes at elderly with diabetes
Secondary abstract: Introduction: With the extension of life expectancy, the population of older people with diabetes is also growing, which is causing a major public health problem due to the complex treatment. The knowledge that diabetics have about their diseases significantly contributes to proper self-care and control of the disease, therefore, it makes sense to evaluate knowledge of diabetes. In this study we want to present the satisfaction of the older people with person-centered care, as person-centered care increases knowledge and has a positive effect towards self-management of the disease. Methods: In the study the descriptive method of research was used. We used a survey questionnaire as a data collecting instrument. The survey questionnaire included: demographics information, diabetes knowledge and patient-centered care. The collected data were analysed and statistically processed using SPSS. Results: The study showed that the level of general knowledge about diabetes in the older people with diabetes seems to be low, since it has an average score of 12,90 ± 4,14. There is also a significant lack of knowledge in the field of causes, course and risk of diabetes. Further the study has found, that the older people find patient-centered care to be good, however, improvements could be made with the involvement of older people into the treatment and care process itself. Discussion and conclusion: Lack of knowledge of diabetes must be eliminated, since it is essential for self-managing diabetes and preventing further complications. Therefore, we believe, that the person-centered care contributes to a higher level of knowledge of a patient itself.
