Abstract

Secondary title: Prevalence of academic doping among nursing students in Slovenia
Secondary abstract: Introduction: We defined the term academic doping as well as researched and analysed the scientific literature with that topic and topics similar to academic doping. We used a questionnaire as the main tool for research which was filled out by nursing students at three nursing faculties in Slovenia. Methods: Quantitative research methodology with the descriptive method of work was used in this diploma thesis. Results: Based on the questionnaire we have determined an 85 % prevalence of products with mildly psychoactive effects and 15 % prevalence of substances with stronger psychoactive effects used for purposes of academic doping. Discussion: We found no evidence supporting the use of academic doping is higher in one gender rather than the other. We also presented the most commonly used substances as a mean for academic doping. We compared our results with results from other studies and have determined that the prevalence of academic doping among nursing students in Slovenia is comparable to students in other fields of work and other universities, countries. Conclusion: We have concluded the prevalence of academic doping among nursing students in Slovenia to be relatively low. Our research also showed that nursing students in Slovenia are less inclined to the use of academic doping. Furthermore, the majority would not support more open law regulation regarding academic doping.
