Abstract

Secondary abstract: The following master's thesis shows the importance of well-developed reading literacy, not only for each individual, but also for the development of the whole society. In the beginning, the basic concepts of reading and reading culture used in the master's thesis are explained. In the core part, the focus is on the individual's development of reading literacy. It is theoretically shown how the development of reading literacy proceeds through different ages, where, how, in what way reading develops over a period, and what knowledge an individual acquires. Due to the belief that high levels of motivation are important for reading in our spare time, it is shown who can motivate students and how. In the master's thesis, reading is interpreted as a cultural value, which is why the focus is on reading literacy of the whole society. We were interested in the impact of the society, to which an individual belongs, has on the development of his or her literacy and how his or her attitude towards reading influences the reading culture of the whole society. We were precisely interested in reading literacy in Slovenia. The goal is to show the responsibility of each teacher for the development of students' reading literacy. Therefore, in the research part of the master's thesis, we searched for appropriate literature for each school subject, with which a teacher would influence the reading of students. School subjects from the 3rd period of elementary school education were chosen.
