Abstract

Secondary abstract: Artistic expression in pre-school period is part of a child's cognitive development which helps them answer cognitive questions. Visual arts and artistic expression are based on the child's creativity. In order to offer children as many opportunities for creativity as possible, we try to provide them with several suitable materials to express themselves with. This diploma thesis determines for which artistic fields teachers have the most diverse material available, how much of it is accessible to the children all the time (where it is kept), for which artistic technique it is used most and how teachers help themselves in order to obtain the amounts they need. In general, it also studies whether Slovene public kindergartens have artistic studios, the equipment of their playrooms in terms of artistic material in relation to the Reggio Emilia concept. The results are obtained by using a survey questionnaire, while the research combines both quantitative and qualitative approaches due to the fact that certain data from the questionnaire are compared to the literature on Reggio Emilia concept. The study confirms that the artistic material teachers have the most is for drawing and that most of the children have access to basic artistic material which is kept in closets and drawers that children can reach. In order to ensure sufficient artistic material, teachers ask parents and acquaintances to help them with it or recycle and borrow the material from another playroom. Most of the material is used for painting and drawing. Teachers think that the artistic material does not affect the children’s' artistic expression. In their opinion, the latter is affected by how frequently the same artistic material is used. In majority of Slovene kindergartens there are no additional rooms for creating art.
