Abstract

Secondary title: The role and importance of monogamy in maintaining existing social order
Secondary abstract: Monogamy is the predominant form of union in the Western world. In my dissertation I critically evaluate its concept and present in detail how through monogamy different social systems assert their ideology, help to control people and increase faith in the existing social system. Through a deeper analysis of media narratives and literature, I explore how the concept of monogamy is closely intertwined with the dominant ideas of modern times. Focus groups help me better understand how other individuals understand and interpret the role of monogamy and its role in maintaining existing social order. I find that the concept of monogamy is being normalized through various social sciences, systems and religions and thus remains the most desirable and prevalent form of union in the Western world. Even though romantic ideal of relationship (which is closely related to the concept of monogamy) didnʼt develop side by side with the capitalist system, it still in many ways benefits from it. The monogamous model is also crucial for Christianity, where it helps to spread the most important Christian dogmas. The concept of monogamy is often under fire by feminist critics, as according to them it justifies actions that further promote the patriarchal system.
