Abstract

Secondary title: Teachers on the integration and adaptation of immigrant pupils – example of Elementary School Dr. France Prešeren, Ribnica
Secondary abstract: There are more and more immigrants in Slovenia who send their children to Slovene schools where the language of instruction is Slovene. Immigrant students thus find themselves facing a difficult task, as they have to learn a new language, for they cannot otherwise actively integrate into the new environment. Teachers, school counsellors and principals can greatly contribute to the student's successful integration into the Slovenian learning environment. Teachers are usually the bridge between the immigrant student and the rest of the class, which is why they also face many challenges, the most common concerning the questions of how to teach such a student, which methods to use, how to adapt the subject matter and, above all, how to successfully integrate this student into the class where he or she will feel accepted. For the research, I used a case study of an actual elementary school, through which I researched the field of teaching immigrant students from the pedagogical workers' point of view. I was interested in finding out how well they knew the system of integration of immigrant students, what their knowledge of the national legislation on integration of immigrant students was, and also what other kinds of problems they encountered on this field.
