Abstract

Secondary title: Environmental knowledge of primary and secondary school students and their attitudes toward environmental issues
Secondary abstract: Protection and conservation of the environment is a key to sustainable economical development and quality of life. Educational institutions, especially schools, are important for raising awarness and developing positive attitudes towards environment. 372 students from four primary and two secondary schools participated in our research. Using a questionaire, we checked the level of environmental knowledge of students, their attitudes towards environment, frequency of their environmentally friendly behaviour and possible correlations between knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. Results show that students have below satisfactory level of environmental knowledge (60 % on the test). However, secondary school students had better results on the test than primary school students. Both show positive attitudes towards environment, although again, secondary school students showed more positive attitudes than primary school students. Boys showed more positive attitudes towards environment than girls. Most of the participants behave environmentally friendly and we didn't find any differences in behaviour regarding gender or age. There was no correlation between environmental knowledge and attitudes. There was also no correlation between knowledge and environmentally friendly behaviour. However, there was a weak correlation between attitudes towards environment and environmentally friendly behaviour.
