Abstract

Secondary title: Quality and safety of emergency patient handover between prehospital and hospital emergency care
Secondary abstract: Introduction: The process of hand-off of a life-threatened patient between the emergency medical team and the emergency center is crucial to ensure the quality and safety of health care and must include all the activities for coordination between healthcare professionals and continuous care of a life-threatened patient. The purpose was to investigate the process of hand-off of a life-threatened patient between the emergency medical team and the emergency center. Methods: Quantitative methodology was used; a questionnaire was used as a research instrument. The sample was purpose-made; 63 employees in emergency medical care from three Health Centers and 71 employees from two Emergency Centers participated in this survey. Data processing was performed based on descriptive statistics - the Kruskal-Wallis test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Data on measured vital functions represent the most important data in the process of hand-off of a life-threatened patient for employees in emergency medical care in 63.5 % and for employees in emergency centers in 67.7 %. 87.3% of employees in emergency medical care and 87.2 % of employees in emergency centers are not familiar with any device for the structured hand-off of a life-threatened patient. No statistically significant difference (U = 2049,500; p = 0.375) was found between emergency medical employees and emergency center employees in the assessment of the need to introduce a structured hand-off. Discussion and conclusion: The quality of the process of hand-off of a life-threatened patient between the emergency medical team and the emergency center is the initial indicator of the quality and safety of the patient's treatment, which has an impact on all further treatments. Its research and the introduction of standardization are of key importance for the development of this process.
