Abstract

Prvi stiki antičnega sveta z britanskim otočjem so se zgodili že več stoletij pred rimsko invazijo leta 43, prvi neposreden stik rimske države in prebivalcev otoka pa je zasluga dveh Cezarjevih pohodov sredi 1. stoletja pr. Kr.

Secondary title: Roman Conquest of Britain
Secondary abstract: First contacts of antic world and British Isles happened some centuries before roman invasion in AD 43 and first direct contact of roman state with native inhabitants happend due to two invasions of Caesar in the middle of first century BC. Almost a century afterwards followed the last roman invasion, which resulted in conquest of majority of the island and establishing of a new province. Crucial role in defense organzation played Caratacus, whose tactics of constant retreating into inner parts of the island resulted in roman advancement. In thirty years majority of the island was under roman rule and Gnaeus Julius Agricola became the new Governor of the province, He led the army into the Scottish Highlands and conquered local tribes. Also roman navy managed to sail along northern coast of the island. Due to change of the Emperors, military focus switced to other parts of the Empire, which halted advancing legions before roman rule could be fully established in scottish territory. This resulted in retreat of roman troops behind the existing border, which remained mainly unchanged until abandonment of the province in 5th Century.
