V južnem delu današnje Anglije so Rimljani pokorili tamkajšnja plemena in ustanovili novo rimsko provinco, provinco Britanijo.

The Roman Invasions of Britain Until the End of the Flavian Dynasty |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Britain had been known in the Mediterranean from at least 500 years BC; however, it was not until the time of Julius Caesar when the first invasion of the island happened. It was him who carried out the two invasions in 55 and 54 BC, nonetheless, the Romans did not remain on the island. Almost 100 years had to pass before a new Roman invasion of Britain took place in the year 43 AD. It was executed by emperor Claudius. In the southern part of present-day England, the tribes had submitted to the Roman power and a new province, the province of Britain, was established. With that, a permanent Roman rule was established simultaneously. Over the decades, several governors took on the role of head of the province and gradually expanded its territory by building fortresses to strengthen the borders. In doing so, they encountered several tribes who were equally hostile towards each other. These tribes joined forces only in specific instances - in the rebellion against Rome. One of them, and also the largest, being the Boudican rebellion in the year 61. After years of pacification and consolidation of the Roman rule, new conquests took place. The province’s greatest territorial gains happened during the time of Agricola, who executed campaigns across the territory of present-day Scotland, and for a brief period of time even established a rule over a large part of it. |
