Abstract

Impact of posttraumatic stress disorder on an individual |
Secondary abstract: |
Introduction: Posttraumatic stress disorder is considered to be the most common consequence of exposure to an individual's traumatic experience. Post-traumatic stress disorder can be defined when the initial symptoms of trauma do not go away and last longer than one month, which on the long term affects the quality of life and brings coping with the consequences in an individual's daily life.
Methods: In the final part we used a systematic review of the literature.
Results: We learned that posttraumatic stress disorder has been understood and researched better since the official introduction of the diagnosis. Despite additional knowledge,, limited success in treatment it has been observed that most individuals still do not receive the appropriate help needed or their treatment is not optimal.
Discussion and conclusion: Research shows that encountering a traumatic experience is inevitable, yet we can influence its impact and outcome with appropriate help and proper coping of the traumatized victim with the traumatic event. The role of the nurse is highly important, as she can recognise a traumatized person in all areas of health care. It is significant for nurse to acknowledge the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and build the trust between the individual who finds it difficult to talk about trauma and therefore open the way to the treatment. We must also not forget that it is the health workers on the front lines of first aid that may be constantly exposed to trauma events and consequently developing a post-traumatic stress disorder. |
