magistrsko delo

Abstract

Secondary title: Views on Austins theory of speech act
Secondary abstract: This thesis deals with the area of speech acts. Generally, speech acts are statements where along with uttering words an action is also performed. The paradigm of speech acts has changed the way people perceive language. Language no longer merely describes the world around us; it has become a tool used to change reality. The thesis systematically describes and defines different theories of speech acts and attempts to resolve the issue of inconsistent terminology in the research field. The thesis establishes that the phenomenon termed "govorno dejanje" in the Slovenian language is better described by the phrase "govorni akt". It furthermore postulates that views of Stanislav Škrabec do not represent a coherent and independent theory of speech acts. Additionally, the thesis views the speech act as a multidisciplinary phenomenon that can be explored through different research aspects and theories complementing one another. Research finds that a complete picture of speech acts can be assembled through a combination of several theories that address speech acts from different research perspectives. The theory of speech acts is perceived as a theory still in development. As a consequence, linguistic science has not yet reached an agreement on terminology and different taxonomies of speech acts. Different theories of speech acts continue to compete with each other.
