Abstract

Televizija Slovenija si medijski trg deli s komercialnimi televizijskimi postajami.

Secondary title: Comparison of anchors' discourse in news shows aired by public and commercial broadcasters: Dnevnik and 24UR
Secondary abstract: The public broadcaster Televizija Slovenija shares the media market with commercial broadcasters. Although it provides a public service it cannot avoid competing with them for viewers. Constant pressure for high ratings and market efficiency lead to finding new ways of journalist reporting. News reporting used to be a genre that was very much different from interpretative journalism but now they intertwine. The thesis explores linguistic means that separate the stylistically neutral objectivised reporting from expressive subjectivized reporting in the main daily news shows Dnevnik aired by Televizija Slovenija and POP TV's 24UR. Since the anchor is the person with the most authority, we wanted to see which elements of linguistic style they use at the public TV that are similar to those used at the commercial broadcaster. Our main goal was to determine how the striving for high ratings affects the style of reporting and how aware anchors are of their power. An analysis of the two shows has revealed that the public broadcaster is starting to use similar style in presenting information as the commercial broadcaster. The texts contained journalist phrases to establish contact with the viewer and address them. Using stylistically marked linguistic features and interpretative linguistic style to address viewers, the public TV turned out to be making similar linguistic choices as the commercial TV.
