Abstract

Secondary title: Immigrant children at English classes in primary schools
Secondary abstract: This master's thesis deals with immigrant pupils in Slovenia who learn foreign languages in the first cycle of primary school (6 -8 years of age). The theoretical part highlights main definitions of immigrant children, guidelines for integrating these children in the Slovenian educational system and procedures for teaching and learning English as a foreign language for these pupils. We present reasons why people actually decide to move to another country, and we focus on legal standings and principles for integrating immigrant children in the Slovenian educational system. The empirical part consists of two semi-structured interviews. The first interview provides answers of two teachers who have experience with teaching English as a foreign language in the first cycle of primary school. The second interview gives insight into experiences of four immigrant pupils in English classes. We analyzed teachers' opinions and experiences with integrating immigrant children in English classes in the first cycle of primary school, as well as their teaching approaches. Furthermore, we present the immigrant pupils' struggle with understanding the instructions and explanations in a foreign language class (English). Analysis of semi-structured interview shows increased use of the teachers' Slovene (the language of instruction) in their English classes. Referring to the teachers' experience, immigrant children, who are almost bilingual (they speak their first language and Slovene), achieve better results in English classes.
