magistrsko delo
Abstract

ǂThe ǂinfluence of English on selected Slovene internet media |

Especially in the past decade, Slovene internet media has flourished dramatically, due to the development, use and overall popularity of the internet. The latter has exposed the American culture to the world, particularly the English language. There is a plethora of different internet media and, naturally, the competitiveness between them is at its peak. Consequently, journalists use all kinds of behaviors to attract new readers and retain current ones, through writing articles in an attractive and modern manner. Time also plays an important role in writing, since the sooner the article is published the better, with the main emphasis usually on the content. Articles from various Slovene internet media have been chosen, namely 24 ur, Cosmopolitan, Delo, Dnevnik, Dolenjski list, RTV Slo, Siol.net, Slovenske novice, Zadovoljna si, Žurnal, Večer, and their vocabulary, grammatical and syntactic aspects of language closely analyzed. The main focus, however, was put on the English influence on Slovene in the abovementioned internet media, since nowadays English is the most dominant language used on the internet and in international circles in general, and has rightfully been named as a lingua franca. Several grammar and spelling features in the selected articles from the media companies listed above were analyzed, with main emphasis on a large number of English words that have undergone various degrees of adaptation. The main aim was to draw attention to the fact that some Slovene journalists exaggerate using English features to the point that it makes the comprehension of certain articles questionable. Furthermore, these profit-oriented articles have pushed aside the importance of language accuracy and language editors as well. It comes as no surprise that Slovene has been losing terminology, since English words are replacing Slovene words in everyday context, which is especially the case with the younger generations; therefore, the possibility of Slovene becoming endangered has also been discussed. Lastly, a short survey was conducted in order to find out whether or not Slovenes understand the content of articles that include distinctive English features, and to get their opinion on the English influence on Slovene internet media. |
