Abstract

Secondary title: Experiencing loss after brain injury
Secondary abstract: Brain injury represents an important event in one's life, affecting every functional area. It can lead to severe and long-lasting consequences. After a brain injury occurs, the patient and their families are faced with big changes and losses of prior traits and abilities. In the present research, we studied relations between the characteristics of persons and their brain injury (age, sex, education level, time passed since the brain injury) and the consequences of the injury (feelings of loss, adaptation, self-awareness, depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, lower self-esteem). 22 participants (13 males, 9 females), aged between 32 and 68, have been included in the study. The participants have experienced a brain injury and are involved in a rehabilitation programme. Using different questionnaires, we discovered a positive psychological state of participants without major problems. We conclude that (in the years after brain injury) individuals display low levels of feelings of loss, moderate adaptation, mild symptoms of depression and anxiety, and moderate to high self-esteem. Subgroups of participants (defined by sex, age, education level, time passed since the brain injury) do not differ significantly in terms of psychological effects of brain injury. For the future, we propose that more research be done in Slovenia related to experiencing brain injury. This could contribute to the development of recommendations for people dealing with a brain injury, which do not yet exist.
