Abstract

Secondary abstract: The aim of our bachelor's thesis entitled Child's First Stories is to examine the speech of preschool children of various ages and to acquaint ourselves with their way of storytelling and creating their own story. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we described children's speech in general, from the beginnings of children's speech to storytelling. We studied the theory of speech development, encouragement, influences and factors of children's speech, their thinking and speech, speech in the first and second age group, and general storytelling of children. We also focused on children's storytelling with pictures, the development of child's first stories, as well as the differences in storytelling of boys and girls. In the empirical part, we carried out a practical examination of children's storytelling with the help of pictures that the children had been presented with for the first time. We examined four groups of children of various age groups. We were interested in discovering whether there is a noticeable difference in storytelling between children of various age groups when seeing the pictures for the first time, whether there is a difference in storytelling abilities of children who have been attending kindergarten for a long period of time and those who have just started, and whether there are differences in the storytelling of boys and girls. We discovered that, in the span of two years, children acquire a considerable amount of vocabulary and consequently, they improve their storytelling skills. We also noticed that children who have been in the kindergarten for a long time are better at storytelling. By comparing the genders, we learnt that boys narrate better than girls.
