Abstract

Secondary title: Encouraging and Perceiving Dual Careers in Primary School Athletes
Secondary abstract: A dual career, which means combining education and sport, can begin developing as early as in primary school. A child who is educated and at the same time regularly and competitively engaged in a chosen sport is involved in the dual career process. Some give up sports during their education, others focus only on sports, and still others combine both with effort. There are many key factors that contribute to a successful dual career, among them the most important are parents, teachers and coaches. The purpose of this master's research was to explore the little-known field of primary school athletes' dual careers. We were interested in how teachers and primary school athletes, more specifically, students with a student-athlete status, perceive the dual career and its encouragement. The study included two hundred sixty-seven students with the student-athlete status and eighty-five teachers from various schools in Slovenia. Two survey questionnaires were used to measure these constructs, one for the students with the student-athlete status and the other for the teachers. Based on the results, we came to a conclusion that the teachers' perceptions of dual careers were positive, which was also acknowledged by the students. They both share the same view that the importance of the teacher and his encouragement in the process of the dual career is essential, also that the dual career has a positive impact on students' self-organization. However, there is a difference how the students and the teachers perceive obstacles in students' dual careers. It is interesting the teachers see obstacles as bigger in comparison to the students. Their views also differ in the perception of different ways and frequency of encouraging the dual career by the teacher and in the connection between teacher's incentives and obstacles. Based on the students' answers, we observed that more teachers' incentives help to reduce obstacles in the dual career process, while this correlation could not be detected in the teachers' answers.
