Abstract

Secondary abstract: We tried to verifythe thesis that ethical in business pays by first carrying out the definition of a moral enterprise and then developed a method and indicators to evaluate the morality of acts of enterprises in terms of the social environment in which they operate. We checked the public selection of the best companies by mixed economic and other criteria within a defined social environment by means of developinga method determined by their level of compliance with moral norms of the social environment. As a matter of moral judgment we used the publications and reports on the operations of companies in the media. As a basis for evaluating the actions we used the majority of the middle social assessments and majority views on morality, common in the social environment in which the entity operates. Social Environment of the Republic of Slovenia contains some special features that affect the majority view in assessing the morality of actions. When analyzing the public selection of the best and largest Slovenian companies we identified some additional features which affect performance and are also reflected in the indicators of moral evaluation of acts of the most successful companies. The thesis that the best business enterprises are also the most aligned with social morality and that morally conscious companies thrive in the business more than their competitors is not confirmed in its entirety. The market conditions have main impact on business.Established order, presence of monopolistic elements and external – national or supranational – market regulation are important as well. Morality is only one additional element in the business, but not so much essential for business survival. If the other conditions are equal between the market competitors, overcoming moral standards and demonstrated conscious business together may indicate the advantage that confirms the proposition that ethical in business pays.
