diplomska naloga visokošolskega univerzitetnega študijskega programa prve stopnje
Abstract
subvencionirano bivanje, prehrana in prevoz, kar omili finančne obremenitve študentov in

Being a student is an important milestone in the life of a young person. During this period
students are still financially dependent on their parents, but at the same time they want to
grow, be independent and autonomous. Regular students in Slovenia do not pay tuition for
their studies and moreover, students can benefit from a number of social transfers, such as
grants, subsidized housing, food and transport, which alleviate the financial burden of
students and their parents during their studies. However, the income that the students gain
with student work is an important additional source of money, which helps covering the
immediate college expenses. In addition, student work also reinforces students’ sense of
autonomy, independence and offers them the possibility to gain some work experience and
knowledge while shaping their skills and personality traits and thus giving an opportunity of a
gradual transition to the labor market. These are also the results of a qualitative research
conducted for the purposes of this thesis. The analysis of the results clearly showed us that
besides the additional income that it brings, their choice to work while studying is
significantly influenced by other factors, such as the acquisition of new experience and
knowledge, as well as the fact that it shapes their skills, helps them to realize what their
employers expectations might be and gives them an overall insight into the world of work,
even though the majority of students do not work in their area of study. Following the
adoption of the Fiscal Balanc Act, which changed the accounting of the concession fee, the
amount of student work dropped significantly. This had a significant impact on the economic
situation of students, as well as on the possibility of gaining work experience, knowledge and
skills, which can decrease competitiveness in the labor market and thus employability for
young graduates. Therefore, we made recommendations for the legislators and employers to
give students the opportunity to have student work in the areas of their study and to acquire
references, which can be of extreme value when finding employment. |
