(diplomsko delo)

Abstract

Metode: Izvedli smo pregled znanstvene in strokovne literature v angleškem jeziku.

Secondary title: Suicidal behaviour of adults with schizophrenia
Secondary abstract: The purpose of this paper was to investigate how schizophrenia affects suicidal behaviour in adult patients. Suicide is the most common cause of death in patients with schizophrenia. Based on research, it has been found that male patients with schizophrenia, are most susceptible to commit suicide within their 30s. However, recent research finds an increasing incidence of suicidal behavior even in old age. Methods: We have reviewed the scientific and professional literature in English language. In the search for articles, we used following databases: PubMed, CINHAL and Science Direct. We have used several limitations for the search: articles not older than ten years and freely available articles or fully published. The course of the search was guided using PRISMA guidelines. The critical evaluation of the evidence was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute tools. Results: We have included six articles in the literature review. We found that adult patients with schizophrenia are highly prone to suicidal behaviour due to the impact of depression and mainly due to psychotic symptoms, that causes hopelessness. The latter can lead to suicidal thoughts and actions. Therefore, adult patients with schizophrenia have a greater risk for suicidal acts than adults without it. Discussion and conclusion: Suicidal behaviour remains one of the most severe problems in patients with schizophrenia of all ages, but the risk only increases with age. It is important that healthcare professionals, in particular know how to identify risk factors that can lead to suicidal behavior, so that they can identify and prevent or at least mitigate them promptly. Suicidal behaviour in adults with schizophrenia remains an area that needs to be explored in more detail.
