magistrsko delo
Povzetek
Samomorilno vedenje in prevelika telesna teža predstavljata globalni javnozdravstveni problem.

Suicidal behaviour and excess body weight |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Suicidal behavior and excess body weight present a global, public and health care problem. Excess body weight is in many cases connected to suicidal thoughts, depression and the feelings of loneliness. In the master thesis we focused on the research of how excess body weight influences on the development of suicidal thoughts and what role do depression and the feelings of loneliness play in it. We were also interested in the gender differences regarding the suicidal thoughts caused by excess body weight. Our research sample consisted of 753 participants (252 males and 501 females). From the 753 participants, there were 346 which had excess body weight, 385 had normal body weight, 19 participants where slightly undernourished, 2 participants were moderately undernourished, while 1 participant showed severe undernourishment. The research data was gathered with four questionnaires (questions about the demographical data, The Paykel et al. Questionnaire for Suicidal Ideation and Attempts - PSS, Depression Anxiety Stress Scales - DASS-21 and Differential Loneliness Scale - DLS) which were published on the internet. While we expected that the majority of hypotheses would be confirmed, we initially rejected almost all of them, except hypothesis number 4 which was partially confirmed. The research results showed that there is no statistically important connection between excess body weight and suicidal thoughts. We discovered that different levels of depression predict a statistically important connection with the development of suicidal thoughts. The expected differences in occurring of suicidal thoughts between males and females with excess body weight did not appear. We found out that suicidal thoughts caused by excess body weight manifest similarly with males and females. A statistically important connection was revealed between the excessive body weight and the feelings of loneliness in the category of community loneliness. In other categories we did not discover any statistically important connections. |
