Abstract

V teoretičnem delu magistrskega dela so vključene različne definicije in najbolj tradicionalne teorije o humorju.

Secondary abstract: This master's thesis deals with humour in the popular American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. It is divided into two parts: theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part includes definitions of humour and the most traditional theories of humour and the jokes that exemplify each of them: Superiority Theory (jokes attacking a target), Incongruity Theory (wordplay) and Relief Theory (jokes with taboo subjects). For our research, we focused on the theory of humour techniques that are divided into 4 groups: language, logic, identity and action. The typology helped us identify jokes in our research sample. The empirical part presents the analysis of 3 selected episodes from different seasons. Because we wanted to explore how the development of characters impacted the humour, we decided to analyse one episode from the 1st season, one episode from the 6th season and one episode from the 12th season, which was the last one. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used when interpreting the results. We found out that humour changed with the development of characters: the characters slowly grew, got tangled in relationships and evolved which was the basis for the slight shift in jokes. The results showed that the number of jokes rose with the later episodes (the episode from the 1st season had the least number of jokes, which were mostly based on language).
