Abstract

Loneliness and escapism in viewers of live streams |
Secondary abstract: |
With the development of technologies, online platforms that enable the transmission of live video content have become part of the everyday life of many users of the World Wide Web. An example of such a platform is Twitch, which allows its users to live stream video games and other activities. Twitch allows streamers and viewers to interact, viewers can choose to subscribe and follow the streamer's channel, and regular viewership allows for the formation of relationships between streamers and viewers. The study explored the relationship between watching live broadcasts, loneliness, escapism, subjective well-being, a sense of virtual community, as well as anxiety, depression, and stress. The research sample included 485 participants aged between 18 and 55 years. Participants watched an average of 20.86 hours of live streams, ranging from 1 hour to 150 hours. For the purpose of the research, the participants filled in the questionnaires UCLA, DASS-21, SOVC, SWLS and the escapism scale. We found that those individuals who spend much of their week watching live broadcasts are also more isolated and report lower subjective well-being. We further found that watching live broadcasts on Twitch is positively associated with self-suppression, but not with self-expansion. Participants who report a stronger sense of virtual community differ significantly in experiencing feelings of loneliness from participants who report the opposite. Those Twitch users who report experiencing feelings of depression more often also report lower life satisfaction. We also found a lower level of subjective well-being in those individuals who watch live broadcasts and report stress, anxiety, or depression at the same time than in individuals who do not report it. Further research is needed to examine the factors that influence the problematic viewership of live streams as well as the factors that have a positive impact on Twitch users. Further research could thus help plan possible interventions or provide assistance to those Twitch users who experience frequent feelings of anxiety, depression and stress, are lonely or report low life satisfaction. |
