B. Sc. thesis

Abstract

The growing number of multidrug-resistant pathogens leads to the need for novel antimicrobial compounds that could replace or be used in conjunction with existing antimicrobial drugs. Antimicrobial compounds derived from the genus Bacillus show promising antiviral activity and could be a solution to this problem. Bacillus subtilis is a powerful source of antiviral agents such as surfactin, peptides and other extracts that have promising antiviral activity against influenza virus, transmissible gastroenteritis virus, hepatitis C virus, herpes simplex virus, suid herpes virus, vesicular stomatitis virus and simian immunodeficiency virus. Ribonuclease derived from Bacillus pumilus has noteworthy antiviral activity against human respiratory RNA viruses, such as influenza A virus and human rhinovirus, and against phytopathogenic RNA-viruses. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens produces the antiviral peptide subtilosin, which can inhibit the viral replication of herpes simplex virus 1. Surfactin like extract-BLFP, derived from Bacillus licheniformis, acts antivirally against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. Infected pigs treated with BLFP have only mild symptoms.
