Abstract

Secondary title: The effect of the COVID-19 epidemic on the work of school counselling service
Secondary abstract: In the Master's thesis, we are interested in how the COVID-19 epidemic has affected the work of school counselling service, what were the adjustments of school counselling service during distance learning like and how distance learning affected the quality of work. In the theoretical part, we describe the school counselling service, distance learning, the COVID-19 epidemic and its effect on education in Slovenia, and in the end, we focus on the work of the school counselling service during the epidemic. In the empirical part, we present the qualitative research in which eight social workers from the Podravje region have participated. The results showed that social workers were much busier during distance learning because their working time extended through the whole day, and additionally, they evaluated their work as harder. The work of a social worker has changed considerably, some of the work tasks were left behind or even cancelled. The main task of the school counselling service in this period was the individual work with students by which the biggest problem was the absence of personal contact. We have established that students needed more help because social workers carried out more hours with them; often they also had to prolong the hours. Students needed help with learning and for the use of information and communication technology. The quality of work of school counselling service during teleworking was worse, although it continued on a satisfactory level because of many efforts that were undertaken and the sacrifice of social workers’ free time. The cooperation was good, we perceived the biggest fall of the quality in the area of counselling work with students. The consequences of the long-term school closures are already visible, as the need for counselling and help with learning has increased.
