Abstract

Secondary abstract: Water was always of great importance to mankind. It was used as a source of drinking water, food, as a mean of travel and so on. In the past, we channeled urban rivers and streams to speed up runoff in order to decrease the flood risk. Unfortunately, this was also making the water bodies less full of life from some perspective. Lately we are realizing this mistakes and because of this renaturalisation projects are more and more common. In this thesis we made a conceptual design of renaturalization of a section of Ljubljanica river by using floating ecosystems, which are ideal in urban environments, where space is limited and therefore we cannot use the other ways of renaturalising streams. The section goes from Špica to Plečnik barrier We also took a look at the impact of such structures from the hydraulics point of view as well and test if this kind of project is sensible from an economic point of view. It was shown that the structure did not have a major impact from the hydraulics point of view. As far as the economic point of view goes, the results showed that the implementation of such project is not feasible, but further research (cost-benefit analysis) would be needed to say that for sure.
