Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂrise of populism in european economies and its economic consequences
Secondary abstract: In the paper, we introduce the phenomenon of populism, which is an inherent political characteristic of modern (European) democracies. The rise of populism in recent decades has been associated with the strengthening of both far-right and far-left political movements and parties in Europe. Several radical populist parties in the Eastern Europe strengthened in the last few decades due to citizens’ dissatisfaction with their difficult economic situation. In the Western Europe, people are also dissatisfied and are criticising the European Union and its institutions. In this paper, we present how outbreaks of economic crises, foreign trade liberalization, financial globalization, increasing income inequality, labour migration, and the failure of economic policies in combination with cultural resistance increase populist support, which further strengthens negative economic processes. In the paper there are presented some possible strategies how to limit populist parties which can help to re-establish the democratic and liberal principles of European economies.
