Abstract

Secondary title: The impact of the media on the propaganda of fan culture
Secondary abstract: In diploma thesis, we haved investigated how the media's coverage of incidents and disturbances, as well as of fan groups in general, influences the functioning and visibility of fan groups (in particular) in society. In today's world, the media are part of our daily lives, guiding and shaping our personal opinions. The media are everywhere, and at every turn they try to reach as many audiences as possible with their coverage. They are more successful if they post about things that appeal to their audience. And violence is certainly one of the areas that attract people's attention, because it is about the individual's desire to be informed. People are most interested in things that can threaten them in any way. The media mainly report on crime in a sensationalist way, and report on the most spectacular episodes of violence. This is why the media tend to focus on incidents caused by fan groups that take place at sporting events or, in some cases, even outside the stadiums and sports halls. On the other hand, this reporting is exploited by fan groups for their primary goal of (self)promotion. When a particular media outlet reports on fan group violence, it means that it will be widely discussed and debated. This is how cheerleaders prove themselves to other cheerleaders and the public, because they love to be in the spotlight. We also found out what the situation is in Europe in this area and how different countries are tackling this problem., First of all we compared the countries of continental Europe with Great Britain, which has taken a very special approach to combating hooliganism and violence at sporting events, through a strict approach of heavy prison and fine sentences and passes for all participants in sporting events. In Slovenia, the problem of hooliganism is not as problematic as it was on the Island, due to the lower interest in football, but we have also introduced a measure to ban violent individuals from attending sporting events. The media focus on violence in football because it is the most popular sport in the world, which further increases the potential for audience interest, which of course leads to more profit, which is one of the main goals of the mass media.
