Abstract

Secondary title: EXAMINING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SQ3R READING STRATEGY IN THE FOURTH GRADE OF THE NINE-YEAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Secondary abstract: With language being the cornerstone of mutual communication and cooperation, Slovenian language classes are essential. Reading is a communication activity and a means of obtaining knowledge. But if learning and reading are to be successful, students have to understand what they read. Prior knowledge and vocabulary play an important role in interpreting new material, i.e. students will find new subject matter easier to grasp if they possess some background information and if they are familiar with the terms used. Another important aspect is the students' approach to the reading material. Reading strategies are the best way as they allow students to identify key information in a text more quickly and make it easier to commit to memory. One of the possibilities in processing general, non-literary texts is the SQ3R reading strategy which guides students through the entire learning process: it adequately prepares them for reading, ensures that reading is done actively, and improves the memorisation of new data. During the three-month long research on fourth graders of nine-year elementary schools, the SQ3R reading strategy proved very effective.
