magistrsko delo
Abstract
Opisali bomo načela, smernice in pravila podnaslavljanja.

Challenges of subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing on the example of the series Star trek: The next generation |
Secondary abstract: |
Communication is one of the main obstacles that deaf and hard-of-hearing people face. The right to accessibility is essential and subtitling is one of the sources of that accessibility, as well as the most common method of translating audio-visual content. Subtitles are texts which are already adapted according to time and space restrictions, and they always require omissions or adaptations. A translator should keep the original message of the film dialogue in subtitles, which is even more difficult when subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. The accessibility of these subtitles is of a great importance, since the target group does not only include adults but also children and students of foreign languages. The following thesis focuses on the challenges in the subtitling process for the deaf and hard-of-hearing and on the issue of these subtitles’ quality. We will analyse the English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing prepared for the first five episodes of the first season of Star trek: The new generation series (1987-1995). The current research will offer an insight in how subtitling for deaf and hard-of-hearing is prepared. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on audio-visual translation, regular subtitling, and subtitling for deaf and hard-of-hearing. We will describe principles, guidelines and rules of subtitling. We will focus on the issue of subtitling sound effects and their concept, for they are the only form of translation that consider non-verbal acoustic elements in a visual text form. Based on the subtitle analysis, the empirical part focuses on whether the translator followed Netflix rules of subtitling for deaf and hard-of-hearing, as well as the way they included sound effects. The analysis will help us find out whether the subtitles are effective or ineffective and unreliable. |
