Abstract

Secondary title: Knowledge and attitudes of students to genetic therapy
Secondary abstract: The recent progress in biological sciences and technology promises a number of possible treatment methods for genetic diseases, from which the future generations, and perhaps also our respondents, will most likely benefit. For now genetic therapy is still in the developing phase. The creation of attitudes and values begins already in childhood and continues throughout our lives. This is why student's views on genetic therapy could and should be at least partially shaped by teachers and school practice. With this survey we wanted to acknowledge behaviour, thinking, knowledge, acceptance and interests of gene therapy among students attending 3rd and 4th grade of two secondary schools and university students who are graduating in biology studies from two faculties, and also find out the differences between this two groups. All respondents seemed to be quite interested in this topic. We found that biology university students have more knowledge about genetics and more profound views on genetic therapy in comparison with students of secondary education. Biology student's responses accurately describe their views on genetic therapy treatments while students of secondary schools cannot completely define some examples in the survey, mainly because they can't imagine procedures of such treatment.
