diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract

Burnout of police officers during COVID-19 |
Secondary abstract: |
Stress and burnout are becoming increasingly common occurrences, both among individuals and in the professional world. The police occupation is considered to be one of the more stressful occupations. By performing a variety of tasks, police officers are exposed to dangerous and unpredictable situations. As a consequence, they are more prone to stress, which can lead to burnout if left untreated. Burnout is a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion resulting from prolonged stress. It is caused by overwork, an inability to achieve the desired results or when an individual is unable to keep up with the demands of their job. For this reason, it is essential to detect or identify deviations from duties for each employee in a timely manner. Failure to manage one's feelings can have a greater detrimental effect in the long run, which is why the police force is advocating participation at various workshops and providing psychological support for police officers. If such feelings are not addressed properly, PTSD can develop, possibly leading to alcohol and drug abuse. During the covid-19 pandemic, which hit Slovenia in 2020, the supervisory security bodies had to do more field work and were thus not able to work from home. In addition to performing their daily routine work, police officers had to observe additional measures to successfully contain the spread of infection. However, these measures were changing nearly every week. Working during this time meant a higher volume of field work for police officers and consequently a higher susceptibility to infection with covid-19. Moreover, communication with people was also crucial, as they were unsympathetic due the state of affairs and the measures taken in the country. For the final part, we reviewed the related literature to present other implications of stress and burnout that had been observed before the time of the pandemic. We also focus on the consequences of burnout and how they manifest themselves in private life. To establish the workload during the covid-19 pandemic and the circumstances leading to burnout, we interviewed two police officers from Ljubljana Centre police station.
