diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa Varnost in policijsko delo

Police officers' confrontation with death and life threatening situations |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
In my thesis, I focused on the encounters of police officers with death and mortal danger, examining the potential consequences of these interactions on individuals. I explored who affected police officers can turn to in times of distress and the methods employed to alleviate the resultant effects.
Police officers face many traumatic events in their careers involving direct or indirect exposure to death. The police culture and the general public expect them to be emotionally resilient and steadfast, but the negative feelings and trauma they experience accumulate and can affect their performance and general well-being.
When police officers are personally involved in traumatic events, the potential for hidden and repressed problems is always present. Untreated trauma can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal thoughts or drug and alcohol abuse. However, there is a stigma attached to mental health in the police ranks, which in turn discourages police officers from seeking psychological help.
Timely and personalized help is the key to preventing and managing these problems. This starts with primary prevention, which is a way of educating people before an event so that they are better prepared for a crisis situation. Secondary prevention (often intertwined with primary prevention) aims to prevent the development of adjustment problems in people who have been exposed to traumatic events. Tertiary prevention, which includes psychotherapy for the affected police officer, is considered a proxy for curative prevention. The assistance itself is provided by psychologists employed by the police or the Ministry of the Interior, but police officers can seek support from police confidants who have extensive operational experience, a good reputation, and respect from other police officers. |
