Abstract

Secondary title: ANALYSIS OF SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS FOR SIXTH GRADE IN PRIMARY SCHOOL
Secondary abstract: Each school year teachers stand before the decision which textbooks to choose for the subject they are teaching. They can choose among different books, from different authors and different publishers. It is also important that books are approved by Council of Experts of the Republic of Slovenia for the current school year because only these textbooks satisfy basic regulation criteria - they cover school aims and are content appropriate. In following thesis we wanted to analyze and compare science textbooks for 6th grade of nine-year primary school. We made quantitative and qualitative analysis of textbooks and established that textbooks differ by number of pages, questions, foreign words and illustrative material. Beside number of pages we were also interested in cognitive levels of questions by Bloom and revised Bloom by Anderson and Krathwohl. On the basis of these criteria we established that textbooks are very different. We also compared science textbooks for 6th grade with biology textbooks for 9th grade (Matjašič, hand writing). We established that textbooks differ because of the different student development stage. Because science textbooks for 6th grade are designed for lower student development stage there are less foreign words and less questions, but there are more pictures and illustrative material. The cognition we discovered is very interesting: in both textbooks - science for 6th grade and biology for 9th grade questions are of lower cognitive levels, although we could almost with certainty claim that questions would not be on the same cognitive level.
