diplomsko delo
Abstract

(Self-)censorhip in the translations of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin |
Secondary abstract: |
The Diploma thesis studies (self-)censorship in the Slovene translations of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The terms "censorship" and "self-censorship" are defined in detail, with a special emphasis on (self-)censorship in translation. Besides the existing Slovene translations, the thesis also presents the original novel and its importance, including the reasons for its emergence. Main attention is paid to the adapted translations of the English original, namely the Slovene adaptations from years 1934 and 1954. As the Slovene versions were created as literature for children and youth, this aspect is considered in a special chapter. The original text needed to be shortened and adapted to suit the needs and abilities of a younger audience. Consequently, some chapters were omitted or combined with others, and the vocabulary was generalised. The Diploma thesis focuses on the socio-political (self-)censorship of the Slovene translation from 1954. Self-censorship of certain historical facts and religious elements of the story is proven by comparing the translation from 1954 to the original text and the Slovene version from 1934, and by taking into account the specific social, political, cultural and ideological circumstances. Self-censorship was detected in the form of omissions of religious and socio-politically controversial parts of the story and on the microstructural level. As such "socialistically" curtailed translation and adaptation of this great anti-slavery novel is still read today, it is high time for a new translation, regardless of whether it be an adaptation for children and youth, or an integral translation that the young people and adults now living in a free country of Slovenia will truly enjoy reading. |
