Abstract

Opravili smo tematsko analizo in sintezo podatkov. Študije so pokazale, da so probiotiki lahko potencialen del pristopa k zaščiti pred respiratornimi okužbami starejših oseb. V študiji so z uporabo Lactiplantibacillus pentosus B240 znižali incidenco respiratornih okužb in z Lacticaseibacillus casei Shirota skrajšali čas trajanja same okužbe. Probiotiki imajo pozitiven vpliv na zdravje človeka, saj spodbudijo imunski sistem in proizvodnjo protimikrobnih peptidov, kratkoverižnih maščobnih kislin in drugih koristnih metabolitov.

Secondary title: The effect of probiotics on respiratory infections in older people
Secondary abstract: Acute respiratory infections are a widespread health problem worldwide, with 90% of deaths occurring in people over 65 years of age. As immunosenescence affects the health of the individual, we take measures to boost the immune system, including taking probiotics. Probiotics are living organisms that, when used in adequate amounts, have a beneficial effect on an individual's health. The bachelors thesis was based on descriptive method, the reviewed literature was obtained from electronic databases CINAHL, PubMed, ScienceDirect. We took into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria and illustrated the literature search process with according to the PRISMA guidelines. To assess the quality of the selected studies, we used an 8-level hierarchy of evidence. Thematic analysis and data synthesis were carried out. Studies have shown that probiotics can be considered as a potential part of an approach to protect against respiratory infections. In the study, the use of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus B240 reduced the incidence of respiratory infections and Lacticaseibacillus casei Shirota reduced the duration of the infection itself. Probiotics have a positive impact on human health by stimulating the immune system and the production of antimicrobial peptides, short chain fatty acids and other beneficial metabolites. The use of probiotics to protect older people against and alleviate the symptoms of respiratory infections can have not only clinical but also economic benefits.
