Abstract
Termini so namenjeni le objektivnemu poimenovanju pojmov v pojmovnih sistemih. Po tradicionalnem preskriptivnem terminološkem pristopu enemu pojmu v pojmovnem sistemu z namenom izognitve dvoumnosti pripada le en termin v poimenovalnem sistemu.

Synonymy as a Phase in the Process of the Establishment of Terminology: The Case of Genetics |
Secondary abstract: |
Synonymy is characteristic of the general language as well as terminology. The two types of linguistic signs - lexemes in general language and terms - differ in the role of synonyms. Terms are intended only for objectively naming concepts in concept systems. According to the traditional prescriptive terminological approach, one concept in a concept system corresponds to only one term in a terminological system in order to avoid ambiguity. This is not always the case in the analysed material since numerous examples in terminological dictionaries include synonymous terms. Contemporary terminological theory studies them from several perspectives (linguistic, cognitive and communicative). The typology of synonyms in linguistic literature varies. This dissertation examines terminological synonymy in genetics and selected related sciences as manifested in terminological dictionaries and other terminological sources. The analysis focuses on the complexity of this linguistic phenomenon which leads to a typological diversity of synonyms. The classification into types and subtypes is based on borrowed components, structural and word-formational properties, properties of semantic extension and special orthographic characteristics. The interdisciplinary research has shown a deviation from the type of synonymy expected by traditional terminological theory, i.e. solely at the level of pairs consisting of a borrowed and a non-borrowed term, since two borrowed or two non-borrowed terms can also comprise a synonym pair. Synonym strings are also frequent and contain up to eleven components in the analysed sample. The existence of multiple terms for one concept indicates that the process of the establishment of terminology has not yet concluded and requires agreement between experts in a given field. The opposite of terminological abundance as a consequence of synonymy is a terminological gap, which is characteristic of some foreign terms or parts of terms in the analysed sample. Some of these examples do not yet have nativized synonym equivalents in terminological systems. They were formed in a foreign language environment since this is also where concepts in the concept systems of professional fields that the terms name originate from. The dissertation presents findings on the typological diversity of synonym pairs and strings as well as on terminological gaps. The findings are significant for the inclusion of terms in a potential future terminological dictionary of genetics and related sciences. |
