Abstract

Tolmačenje je eden izmed najzahtevnejših in najstarejših poklicev.

Secondary title: Community Interpreting at the University Medical Center Maribor
Secondary abstract: Interpreting is one of the oldest and most demanding professions. Nowadays, the need for community interpreters is growing due to the increasing frequency of migration. The main aim of the master’s thesis was to prove that interpreters in health care are active participants in a dialogical situation and do not only take the role of a "conduit" as assumed in the literature. We used a descriptive method in the theoretical part and a questionnaire survey in the empirical part. The study has shown that interpreters are not formally qualified to interpret in health care and confirmed that they perform several other tasks in addition to interpreting. The results also showed that interpreters lack the time and materials to prepare adequately for their assignments. We were able to confirm that interpreters are aware of the importance of cultural competence in ensuring successful communication. We assumed that interpreters actively intervened in the communication, which was confirmed by our research, indicating gaps between theory and practice.
