magistrsko delo
Abstract

Enteral nutrition of mechanically ventilated patients in the intensive care unit |
Secondary abstract: |
The importance of nutrition in the critically ill is increasingly recognized, especially in patients who have long-term intensive care unit stays and often require long-term life support and go through a state of severe catabolism. Adequate nutrition can help speed up recovery and prevent additional complications. With this master's thesis, we want to determine the nutritional status of mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care and to find the reasons for the interruption of nutrition.
In the theoretical part, we reviewed the professional and scientific literature and used keywords to help us find relevant literature. In the empirical part, we used quantitative research to collect data from the intensive care unit of one of the hospitals in Slovenia. We included 50 patients in the research who were hospitalized from July to December 2022. The collected data were processed descriptively in Microsoft Excel 2016 and displayed in the form of graphs and tables.
More than half of the intensive care patients received between 95-100 % of the prescribed nutrition, slightly fewer received between 85-95 % of the prescribed nutrition, and a few patients received less than 85 % of the prescribed nutrition. The most common reason for reductions in dietary intake was imaging investigation.
Based on the results of the research, we found that with the help of enteral nutrition, the daily need for nutrients is ensured in most mechanically ventilated patients. Deterioration of the health condition affects the implementation of additional examinations and interventions, as a result of which the delivery of enteral food is interrupted, and thus the daily intake of nutrients is also reduced. |
