Abstract

Secondary title: Detecting changes in functionally degraded areas using Sentinel-2 data
Secondary abstract: In the master's thesis, we focused on the systematic identification and analysis of changes in selected industrially degraded areas in Slovenia, using satellite images from the Sentinel-2 satellite. The study involved the selection of suitable industrially degraded areas based on their size and significance, as well as the acquisition of raw satellite data, which was then processed for reliable analysis. Remote sensing techniques, including calculations of various indices such as NDVI, NDBI, SBI, BAI, BI, and BI2, were employed to categorize changes. In addition to detecting changes through mathematical operations and indices, we also conducted supervised classification to map changes in the selected industrially degraded areas. Results from five selected test areas revealed changes in vegetation, urbanization, and actual land use. The changes mostly aligned with the goals outlined in strategic spatial documents aimed at revitalizing industrially degraded areas. In this way, we confirmed the thesis of the master's thesis that remote sensing methods using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery can effectively detect and analyze changes in degraded areas. This provides insights into the current state and monitors changes over different years, contributing to better planning and monitoring of set goals in the revitalization of degraded areas.
