Secondary abstract: | The paper analyses the status of genre in the teaching of literature and its role in the interpretation of literary works. It is claimed that to a certain extent interpretation is influenced by the type of work and the age of the students, and that the communicative potential of a work of literature is linked with the manner in which it anticipates the reader%s participation. Genre theory is derived from the reading and interpretation of a number of literary works, while the genre characteristics of an individual literary work determine the manner of its use in the teaching of literature. This methodological approach is the basis for the appropriate methods used in the teaching of literature, illustrated by a humorous text. |
