Abstract

Secondary title: Flexibility development of young basketball players
Secondary abstract: Flexibility is one of the motor skills that are very important in basketball. All these motor and functional skills are important for the successful performance of the elements in the game of basketball (Vujin et al., 2016). The aim of this thesis was to determine whether we can improve flexibility through systematic and well-planned training. Frequently, coaches tend to neglect the development of flexibility as they consider it unimportant. In this study, we divided the basketball season into three periods and presented how we can strengthen and maintain flexibility. We described and presented a workout suitable for each period and presented a set of tests that can be used to monitor progress in flexibility. In this study, we decided to see if we could improve the mobility of basketball players through properly planned and systematic exercise. 10 basketball players of the U-12 selection took part in the study. The players were tested using five tests before and after a four-week training session. The test battery consisted of: the Prebend test, the FMS deep squat assessment, the FMS lunge step test, the FMS leg raise assessment and the FMS engagement test. The players performed the exercises four times a week at the beginning and end of training. After the second testing, the data were analysed using Excel and SPSS and then compared with each other. In the thesis we found that correctly chosen exercise can have a positive effect on the development of flexibility. In fact, all the candidates showed progress after the four-week training session from when they were tested the first time. On the basis of the results, we can claim that flexibility can be improved using well-executed and planned exercise.
