Secondary title: Assessment of latency in the hypothetical data network of the national air traffic supervisor
Secondary abstract: As we know the air traffic in the world and Europe is increasing. With the growth of it, is also consequently increasing the number and range of communications in aviation. Frequencies dedicated to air communications are now days busier and more congested, due to the limited number of them. Therefore we require new solutions in the field of aeronautical telecommunications. There have been a lot of problems with the use of voice communications over past decades. The lower quality of these communications brought to misinterpretation of data in some areas. To solve these problems, corporations like ARINC developed various systems which enable data communication between aircraft and ground in the form of text messages. The first system that was presented by ARINC Corporation and that allowed data transfer was ACARS. ACARS has become the basis for further development of existing and emerging data links. Currently the most common data link is VDL mode 2. In this dissertation we present basics of aeronautical telecommunications and ACARS system. We also define the meaning of latency in transmission network and at the end we have tried to determine a latency of hypothetical data transfer from aircraft above the Slovenian sky to our national air traffic control.
