državljanska vojna med kraljem Štefanom in cesarico Matildo
Abstract

Anarchy: The Civil War Between King Stephen and Empress Matilda |
Secondary abstract: |
The master's thesis presents the war in historiography known as The Anarchy. This was a civil or succession war in England between King Stephen and Empress Matilda in the first half of the 12th century. After the death of King Henry I, the disputes over the succession led to a civil war. Although the war officially began in 1139, the conflicts started in 1135 when King Stephen seized the throne. The war lasted until 1153, and in those years, only a few decisive events were witnessed. The period was marked by a state of anarchy or, better said, the simultaneous rule of the two, King Stephen and Empress Matilda, who each had their army of supporters. The balance of power shifted between the two sides until Matilda decided to leave England in 1148 and move to Normandy. After her departure, a new protagonist entered the war. This was Matilda's son, Henry II, who became the next claimant to the throne. In 1153 at Wallingford, Henry II reached an agreement with King Stephen, where the king recognized him as his legitimate successor. After Stephen's death in 1154, young Henry reigned in England as King Henry II, paving the way for a successful reign of the Plantagenet dynasty. |
