Abstract

Secondary title: Comparison of independent learning with e-learning materials and a traditional learning approach to internet safety for primary school students in grade 4
Secondary abstract: The use of computers is nowadays a part of everyday life. Nowadays, the use of computers is a part of everyday life. A computer allows us to perform a variety of tasks in our daily routines, which may serve entertainment purposes or have an educational function, such as learning through digital content. However, when using a computer for browsing the internet, we are exposed to various threats, such as computer viruses, cyber-attacks, and identity theft. In this master's thesis, we will focus on Nigerian scams, identity theft, and understanding the principles of creating strong passwords. Our study will involve a sample of 124 fourth-grade students, through which we will examine which method of teaching internet security is more effective-self-directed learning using pre-prepared e-learning materials or traditional classroom instruction. The e-learning material will take the form of a learning path designed for independent study on internet security. Half of the randomly selected students from each fourth-grade class will follow this learning path and form the experimental group, while the remaining students will receive traditional classroom instruction and form the control group. To assess the effectiveness of each learning method, we will collect data using a pre-test, which students will complete one hour before being divided into groups. This test will evaluate their prior knowledge of the subject. After the experiment, students will take a post-test after reuniting in their classrooms. Additionally, the experimental group will complete a survey questionnaire to provide insight into their satisfaction with self-directed learning using e-learning materials. The aim of our research is to compare two different approaches to teaching internet security to fourth-grade students. With this master's thesis, I aim to contribute to greater online security, promote independent learning in schools, and highlight the meaningful use of computers in education, given the rapid technological advancements. These findings will enhance the learning process and improve the efficiency of education compared to traditional teaching methods.
